Yeah. It all depends on the goal of the artist. The most accessible art isn’t going to be the most challenging. It makes me think of what I’ve been thinking about while listening to Hail to the Thief. It’s hard music, you need to listen to the record at least a few times to even appreciate it. But the more I listen to it, the more I love it.
I don’t think most people have that sort of relationship with music, where they give it multiple chances before they decide, “fuck it, I’m done.” I’d guess that the mass market (though hard to generalize) probably listens to something once and doesn’t give a second chance if they didn’t like it that first time.
