When I first started writing on Medium, I neither had a job nor financial stability. I bought into the idea that one could make a lot of money on Medium — then quickly realized that I didn’t want to write about the things that would get me there.
These days, I have a full time job, freelance clients (tutoring and random spreadsheet work), while saving my creative energy for music and writing.
I’m a much happier person today than I was before, because of much of what your piece described. It’s hard to be creative when you don’t have a routine or have a lot going on in your life other than being creative. It’s also hard to be creative when you’re worried about how to pay off your student loans (not a problem anymore, thank gosh).
I want to say, though, that it truly depends on one’s situation. I’m lucky to work at a business that is fully remote and is flexible in terms of work-life balance. I cannot say the same for some of my friends, who work from the early morning till late at night and dislike their jobs.
Thanks for the piece and I can’t wait to read more of your writing!
